Qatar Urges International Community to Play Effective Role to End Syrian People Tragedy

Geneva, June 10 (QNA) - The State of Qatar called on the international community to play a serious and active role in ensuring accountability and preventing the impunity of perpetrators, saying the hesitation of the international community to deal seriously and effectively with the violations and crimes committed by the Syrian regime made the regime to persist in its crimes, This came in a speech delivered by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva, HE Faisal bin Abdullah Al Henzab , at the 25th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva ( item 2) entitled " Renovation of United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (UNHCR) " , which was held here today. Al Henzab said that Qatar agreed with the UNHCR that what is happening in Syria was appalling human tragedy for the Syrian people, especially in light of the Syrian regime committing more war crimes and crimes against humanity and its refusal to respond seriously with all Arab and international initiatives to end the conflict and reach a peaceful solution that meets the legitimate demands of the Syrian people. He stressed that the Syrian regime's insistence to holding illegal presidential elections proved that this regime deliberately sought to thwart all these initiatives. Qatar's delegation strongly condemned the statement of the UNHCR about the violations committed by the Israeli occupation authorities, particularly with regard to the policies of illegal Israeli settlement in the city of East Jerusalem, especially in the area (E1), which hinders reaching a just and lasting solution based on two states, he noted. He emphasized that the Qatar's delegation shared the UNHCR concern over the growing discrimination phenomenon based on religion, race, and that a number of political leaders adopted ideas that abuse the core regional and international human rights treaties. He also expressed deep concern about deterioration of the Muslims situation in Central African Republic, "calling on the international community to ensure halting attacks on them and to protect all their rights. He praised the tireless efforts made by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, during the past six years to promote and protect human rights in all parts of the world, saying "We appreciate the objectivity and professionalism that characterized her performance during her mandate." HE Al Henzab confirmed Qatar's delegation's commitment to the close and continued cooperation in providing all appropriate support to the efforts and activities of the UNHCR in order to promote , protect and improve human rights .(QNA)
