Qatar Warns Against Food Security Deterioration in Somalia

Geneva, September 26 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has warned against the continued deterioration of the food security situation in Somalia, and called on the international community to provide urgent support to meet the humanitarian and relief needs and relief, in order to avoid the recurrence of the famine that occurred in 2011. This came in a speech delivered by Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva Nour Ibrahim Al-Sada during the twenty-seventh session of the Human Rights Council, as part of the tenth item in the Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in Somalia. Nour Al-Sada said after we saw the report, we agree that the human rights situation in Somalia is very complex, as mentioned in the report, and has been affected significantly due to the conflict ongoing in the country for more than two decades. We also support the Independent Expert remarks that the review and reform of the interim constitution and the continuation of the federal government's work, building of the state's institutions, are considered of the most important pillars to move forward towards achieving stability, reconciliation, development, promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. She pointed out that the State of Qatar condemns all attacks that take place against civilians in Somalia and all violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and calls for necessary investigations to ensure the accountability of those responsible and to bring them to justice. The Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar in Geneva said “in order to maintain the achieved progress and to face the big challenges my country's delegation urges the international community and all effective bodies to coordinate efforts to provide assistance and capacity building to support and develop the Somali institutions in the field of human rights. We also call on the Government of Somalia to support the implementation and development of a roadmap for human rights and to seek the realization of justice, stability and development as well as the achievement of national reconciliation, the fight against corruption and bribery and the establishment of the rule of law. Concluding, Nour Al-Sada underd Qatar's commitment to support Somalia, noting that many national institutions contributed in the implementation of development projects including education, health and youth support projects to promote recruitment solutions, in addition to supporting orphan care programmes and provision of humanitarian and relief assistance.(QNA)
