QRC Signs MoU to Establish 100 Housing Units in Gaza

Doha, January 20 (QNA) - Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has recently signed an MoU with the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing to carry out a new relief project for Gaza people who lost their houses during the latest Israeli war. Under the agreement, 100 temporary housing units will be built and furnished for families whose houses were destroyed in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza. The signing ceremony was held in a press conference at the Ministry's premises, attended by the Minister of Public Works Dr Mufeed Al-Hasayna, and the Director of QRC Office in Gaza, Dr Akram Nassar, as well as representatives of the Ministry and QRC. In his remarks, Dr Al-Hasayna commended the role played by Qatar in supporting the Palestinian people, confirming that the new project would alleviate the suffering of the homeless families affected by the 50-day Israeli war, which demolished thousands of Palestinian houses and facilities. Considering the project an urgent help for the displaced, he pledged full cooperation with QRC to complete it and protect the homeless during the cold winter. Dr Nassar said, "This project is the product of a generous fundraising initiative by the Maldivian people during the recent Israeli war. The money was given to QRC to conduct urgent relief projects in response to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the enclave." According to him, a budget of nearly $1.5 million was allocated to build 100 temporary housing units for the displaced in Beit Hanoun; undertake all infrastructure works to serve the sheltering centers; rehabilitate the water and sewerage installations in Gaza and Jabalia by supplying maintenance tools for pumps, power generators, and networks; and rehabilitate and build water wells. "Actually, these temporary houses are not a replacement for the large-scale reconstruction of Gaza to remove the impact of the recent war. The purpose of the project is to preserve human dignity and provide safe shelters for the homeless families until their neighborhoods are reconstructed," Dr Nassar noted. He appreciated the role of the Palestinian government, the Palestinian Red Crescent, and the beneficiary and operative institutions such as the Beit Hanoun, Gaza, and Jabalia municipalities and relief agencies for contributing all the information and technical support to launch the project and ensure full compatibility between design standards and user needs. The project is expected to be completed and deliver homes to the beneficiaries by the end of January 2015. (QNA)
