Quake-hit Chiang Rai rattled by aftershocks

CHIANG RAI, May 13 (TNA) - Aftershocks continued to rock the northern Thai province of Chiang Rai Tuesday, nine days after a powerful earthquake struck the province, with 11 tremors recorded since early this morning, according to the Thai Meteorological Department’s Seismological Bureau. The Thai seismic agency reported the first tremor with magnitude of 3.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Mae Suai district at 12.14 am and it was followed by 10 aftershocks. It said the latest quake with the magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Phan district at 9.20am. According to the Seismological Bureau, more than 700 aftershocks had been recorded in the northern region since May 5 when the 6.3 magnitude quake struck Chiang Rai’s Phan district. They included eight large aftershocks with magnitude between 5.0-5.9, 29 medium ones with magnitude between 4.0-4.9, 124 tremors with magnitude between 3.0-3.9, and 606 tremors with magnitude of under 3.0. Meanwhile, Luck Wajananawat, president of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BACC), said the bank will carry out assistance measures for customers and people affected by the powerful quake and its aftershocks. According to him, the bank will extend repayment deadlines for one year and offer soft loans of up to 500,000 baht to each farmer affected by the quake. Luck said that the bank will also distribute necessities to quake victims and financial assistance to its clients whose houses were damaged or destroyed. (TNA)
