Railway transportation expected to increase after upgrade

BANGKOK, March 26 (TNA) - Railway transportation is expected to increase to between 5 – 10 per cent in future from only 2 per cent now, said Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittyapaisith. The minister said while presiding over the 120th anniversary of the railway business establishment today that the government has attached great interest on improving rail system as well as on linking rail system with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in accordance to its rail development plan. Upon completion of the plan, he said some of over 80 per cent of people, who are now undertaking road travelling are expected to switch to using the train system. Meanwhile, the activities to celebrate the 120 years of the railway business establishment include the exhibition on the history of Thai railway and a stream train trip to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, which attracted both local and foreign passengers.
