Rainwater-related danger remains in southern Thai provinces

THAI SOUTH, December 15 (TNA) - Although downpours have stopped in many provinces in the Thai South, floods remain in low-lying areas and the Meteorological Department warns of rainwater-related danger in four provinces, in particular, including Surat Thani, Songkhla, Narathiwat and Nakhon Si Thammarat. In Nakhon Si Thammarat, the sky remained cloudy and rainwater was flowing into low-lying areas on Monday, causing flood levels in Phra Phrom District remained 50-60 centimetres deep and local roads were impassable to small vehicles, while minor roads near local canals were also flooded in the Muang Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipality. In Surat Thani Province, people in Chaiya District hurriedly moved belongings to higher places late last night, as runoffs from the Kaeng Krung National Park reached the district, causing main roads to be 50 centimeters under water and become impassable to small vehicles and four schools were, thus, closed. In Songkhla, although flooding became stable in 16 districts where rain stopped, runoffs inundated a monastic center in Hat Yai District, with flood levels remaining at about 50 centimeters deep, forcing monks to evacuate. In Phatthalung, three districts remained flooded, including Khuan Khanun, where nearly one meter inundation remained and more than 1,000 local households were in trouble, as about 40,000 rais or more than 60 square kilometers of paddy fields and rubber plantations were inundated, forcing five schools to be closed.
