Rapid Development Of Sarawak Proves Formation Of Malaysia A Success - M'sian Pm Najib

MIRI(Sarawak, Malaysia) Sept 17 (Bernama) - Prime Minister Najib Razak has expressed a sense of pride to see the rapid development of the east Malaysian state of Sarawak, proof that the hard work by his predecessors in forming Malaysia yielded good outcome. He said the long journey full of challenges faced by Sarawak and Sabah in the formation of an independent, sovereign and independent nation, makes Malaysia a big family consisting of people of all races. The responsibility to continue the development lies with the people and as the head of government, it is his responsibility to listen to the grouses and demands of all family members. Najib said the spirit and determination of the people of Sarawak and Sabah show that they are proud and satisfied with the wise leaders who opted for independence with Malaysia. "We will not be going back and are going to defend the sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia and as the prime minister, this is my responsibility. "If there is an attempt to undermine the national security and sovereignty, be prepared to face the full force of the law." The prime minister was speaking at the national level 51st Malaysia Day celebration, here Tuesday night. It was also attended by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri (Head of State), Abdul Taib Mahmud, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Chief Minister Adenan Satem and several Cabinet ministers. Sept 16, 1963 was the historical day which saw the formation of Malaysia via consensus between the Federation of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak (then also Singapore). Najib said he heard about Sarawak's request to increase revenue, especially in relation to a raise in oil royalty, adding that the matter could be negotiated in a "family spirit." Najib said certain parties are trying to create a polemic about the anniversary of the country's independence day (Merdeka Day) celebrated on Aug 31 and Malaysia Day celebrated on Sept 16. "The issue does not arise because the United States, for example, celebrates July 4 every year as the national day whereas states in the country choose the dates they joined." He said starting next year, Merdeka Day celebration on Aug 31 will not state the number of years and Malaysia Day will continue to be celebrated every Sept 16. The event saw about 500 participants presenting traditional performances and a choir which sang patriotic songs. It was marked by a 10 minute fireworks display followed by performances by popular singers. -- BERNAMA
