Rescue workers search for more victims of capsized ferry

BANGKOK, November 4 (TNA) - Rescue workers have continued searching for more victims of a ferry which capsized on Sunday off Koh Lan, or Lan Island, in Thailand's eastern resort Chon Buri province. Marine and tourist police and divers immediately rushed to the tragic site to search for missing passengers of the ill-fated Koh Lan Travel ferry, which capsized on its way from the island to the mainland Pattaya City. Initial reports indicated that six people died in the incident, 16 others were injured, but workers have rescued 209 passengers from the incident so far. The six dead victims reportedly comprise of three Thai nationals and three foreigners, while local officials said they had not yet known the exact number of passengers on the ferry. Meanwhile, Chon Buri Governor Khomsan Ekachai convened relevant officials at the Provincial Hall to gather information on the tragedy and has set up an assistance center at the Bali Hai Pier on the mainland. The owner of the ferry initially told investigators that the ferry hit submerged rocks and the driver tried to continue heading to the mainland Pattaya City. The police investigators are further probing the case and will soon seek an arrest warrant against the driver of the ferry. (TNA)
