Review Freedom Of Social Media - M'sian Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- Social media freedom in this country needs to be reviewed to ensure that it does not jeopardise inter-racial harmony, said Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. He was referring to the incident at Low Yat Plaza over the weekend when a riot broke out and some netizens spread misinformation and instigated strife. "I think we need to look at the freedom of social media again because all kinds of stuff are going in ... may be 20 per cent facts and 80 per cent lies," he told reporters when visiting Low Yat Plaza here Wednesday. "I think we should heed what the Prime Minister said and make sure that information (that can provoke trouble) is not spread through social media. "The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission should see to this." On Tuesday, Prime Minister Najib Razak urged the public not to misuse information to worsen the consequence of the incident. He did not want the situation to be made a racial issue. Tengku Adnan, who is United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) secretary general, reminded netizens not to play with racial sentiments. "Unity in diversity has made Malaysia what it is today. We have been fostering peace and harmony for 58 years now. So please don't do something that could spark any racial trouble," he said. -- BERNAMA
