Rice Committee to Handle Plunging Rice Prices

BANGKOK, Oct 30 (TNA) – The Rice Policy and Management Committee will meet tomorrow to find measures to help farmers after rice prices dropped to a 10-year low. Monday’s meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha. Last week, the Commerce Minister discussed with the Thai Rice Mills Association to assess a large quantity of rice from each cultivation area, expected to be released into the market in the next few months. Citing rice harvest with high humidity in the current harvest season, rice millers across the country are ready to help farmers and buy rice at appropriate prices under the government’s criteria. However, it is believed that if there is more rice demand in the global market, domestic rice prices could be pushed up. (TNA)
