Road safety campaigns urged during Chinese New Year Festival

BANGKOK, February 4 (TNA) - The Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation calls for the Thai government to seriously campaign for road safety during the Chinese New Year Festival, claiming that death toll from traffic accidents during the annual festivity period is also high. Dr. Taejing Siripanich, Secretary-General of the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation, told journalists on Thursday that death toll during the annual Chinese New Year Festival has been the third highest, after that in the New Year and the Songkran Festivals, but authorities have not seriously raised awareness on road safety among people celebrating the Chinese New Year. Dr. Taejing cited as an example that in the 2015 Chinese New Year Festival in Thailand, road accidents killed 144 people and injured 6,151 others nationwide. Dr. Taejing urged that an order of Chief of the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) General Prayut Chan-ocha, who is also the Thai prime minister, for authorities to temporarily seize vehicles of drunk-drivers be maintained so that authorities can continue the seizure during the upcoming Chinese New Year Festival. Dr. Taejing also proposed that the Thai government support motorists for installing car cameras, as such cameras should help reduce the number of irresponsible drivers who, for example, are drunk or violate traffic rules in the way that jeopardises public safety.
