Roadside Bomb Kills Soldier, Injures Three Others In South Thailand

NARATHIWAT, June 30 (Bernama) -- A soldier was killed and three others seriously injured when the patrol vehicle they were travelling in, was hit by a homemade bomb Wednesday. A police spokesman here said the incident occurred in Ranget, Narathiwat about 10.50am (local time) when the soldiers were on patrol. "The homemade bomb weighing 20kg was planted on the edge of the road and exploded when the patrol vehicle went over it," he said. The bomb blast follows two violent incidents at separate locations in Yala province and Takbai last night. In Kampung Talok (Yala), locals Dollah Etae, 62, and his son, Alawi, 37, were shot dead while at their home, police said. Mukim Lamai police chief Col Piyawat Sannoi said another occupant of the house, identified only as Ramlee, 29, was injured in the incident which occurred about 9.30pm. The police found 20 shells at the scene, he said. In another incident Tuesday, gunmen attacked the border control headquarters at Kampung Taliang, according to Narathiwat assistant police chief Col Rattabavorn Bamrunggrod. He said in the 8.45pm incident, the gunmen attacked the headquarters using an M-16, AK-47 and a M-79 grenade launcher. The two sides exchanged fire for 30 minutes but no death or injury was reported, he added. -- BERNAMA
