Russia and Egypt discuss resumption of air flights between countries

MOSCOW, March 16. /TASS/. Russia and Egypt have discussed the resumption of air flights between the two countries, Russia’s of Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said on Wednesday after a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. In his turn, the Egyptian minister said that Egypt had complied with all the safety requirements to airports, which were set by Russia. "This issue is definitely on the agenda, and we are interested in it (resumption of air links - TASS.) as much as the Egyptian colleagues," - Manturov said. "Of course we discussed this issue, but we primarily proceed from the evidence and the work being done by our services in terms of finding the most optimal options and provide flight safety of the flights, which will be made in the future," - Manturov said. "We are now very closely cooperate and work in this direction. I would like to say that in Egypt we are have taken a lot of different delegations experts on aviation security, we have fulfilled all the requirements and recommendations, which were addressed to us by the Russian experts. We provided maximum assistance to those specialists who arrived in Egypt for this purpose,"- Egypt’s Foreign Minister said. According to him, the cancelation of air traffic has a negative impact on the Egyptian economy, but Egypt hopes that the resumption of air traffic and, accordingly, the resumption of tourist flow will minimize the negative effects. The A321 plane belonging to Russia’s air company Kogalymavia was en route from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt to St. Petersburg in Russia (flight KGL 9268) when it crashed over the Sinai Peninsula early on October 31, 2015. The plane fell near El Hasna populated locality 100 km to the south of Al-Arish, the administrative center of the North Sinai Governorate (province). All the 224 people onboard, including 217 passengers and the 7-member crew, died. The passengers, most of whom were Russians, also included four Ukrainians and one citizen of Belarus. On November 6, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed with the recommendations of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee to suspend all air flights to Egypt. Read more
