Russia backs plan for creating “wise men” group to address security challenges - Lavrov

BASEL, December 4. /TASS/. Moscow supports Switzerland’s proposal for establishing a group of “wise men” to draft recommendations on how to counter challenges to security in all dimensions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of the OSCE foreign ministers. “It is extremely important to rely on an impartial and professional analysis of tasks confronting us,” Lavrov said. He voiced the hope the Swiss presidency’s proposal for establishing a special group for studying security threats would be approved in a declaration on continuing the “Helsinki plus 40” process. Lavrov noted in particular the importance of adopting a declaration timed for the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, expected to serve as “a reminder of the heroic accomplishments of the victors over fascism and Nazism and to prevent re-emergence of misanthropic ideologies.” “I would like to give credit once again to the Swiss chairmanship, which has decently coped with its functions in a very adverse environment and to wish the Serbian counterparts success in 2015,” Lavrov said in conclusion.
