Russia, Cambodia sign memorandum on fight against terrorism

MOSCOW, May 27. /TASS/. Russia and Cambodia on Wednesday signed an intergovernmental memorandum of understanding in the sphere of fight against terrorism. The document was inked by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng. The memorandum is "devoted to boosting activity in the fight against terrorism, one of the key evils," Lavrov said. "We appreciate our traditionally friendly relations with Cambodia and are interested in promoting them in all the spheres and the intensification in the law enforcement sphere," he said. The minister said he expects to discuss other areas of dialogue, namely in light of agreements between the countries’ leadership and the contacts between the prime ministers. Lavrov called for discussing the contractual basis, the drafting of documents and the outcome of a meeting of the intergovernmental commission during which the sides reached agreements "allowing bringing the trade and economic cooperation to the new level." "We value our cooperation as part of the Asia-Pacific Region bodies, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)," Lavrov said. Lavrov said he is convinced that the visit of the Cambodian deputy premier and his talks with Russia’s Federal Security Service and the Interior Ministry will help "strengthen our confidence." The Cambodian minister said his visit to Russia is a great opportunity to build ties. "We need to continue our political dialogue at the level of the heads of governments, ministries and agencies," he said. "I back your assessment of our bilateral relations and share your intention towards strengthening them in various spheres," he said. Kheng said the document signed on Wednesday is the most important tool not only in the fight against terrorism but also in ensuring security in a regional format. Read more
