Russia dispatched 30 planeloads of humanitarian aid to Syria over 18 months - Lavrov

SOCHI, November 26. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia has dispatched 30 planeloads of humanitarian aid to Syria over the past eighteen months. “Russia is delivering considerable relief aid to the Syrian people. Over the past eighteen months the Emergencies Ministry has sent about 30 flights with such cargoes,” Lavrov told the media after talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem on Wednesday. Humanitarian aid is provided by the Russian government, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Fund of St. Andrew the First Called, the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society and other Russian civil society organizations. Lavrov said that Russia was interested in developing trading and economic cooperation with Syria, which was discussed at a meeting of the inter-governmental commission a month ago. Also, he stated that Russia supported the Syrian leadership in its efforts to ensure the rights of persecuted Christians. “We believe it is of fundamental importance to ensure the Middle East and Syria should be preserved as states where the people of all nationalities and faiths can live in equality and equal security.
