Russia fully honors commitments under Chemical Weapons Convention - OPCW head

MOSCOW, April 26. /TASS/. Russia has destroyed 93 percent of its chemical weapons stockpiles and is thus fully complying with the obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Uzumcu said at a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. "Russia is among the countries, which play a leading role in meeting the obligations under the CWC," he said. "Russia is fully complying with its obligations under the CWC," Uzumcu said. As for chemical weapons destruction, Russia has already destroyed 93 percent. We expect this program to be completed in the coming years." "Russia played a very important role in terms of chemical weapons destruction," he went on to say. "Thanks to the leading role played by Russia in this field, we have been able to achieve significant and concrete results, which was reflected in the fact that the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize."
