Russia may help restore UNESCO monuments in Syria damaged by terrorists

MOSCOW, November 25. /TASS/. Russia should take part in estimating the damage that terrorist groupings have inflicted on the facilities listed by UNESCO as global heritage sites and, on top of that, assist in their restoration, the Secretary of Russia’s Commission for Relations with UNESCO, Grigory Ordzhonikidze said on Wednesday at a meeting of the Board of the Ministry of Culture. "Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who spoke recently at the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris, came up with an initiative to send an expert mission to the UNESCO global heritage sites, including the ones in Syria, after they are liberated from the terrorist groupings," he said. "The goal of this mission is to evaluate the amount of damage inflicted on the sites and to draw up a plan for their subsequent restoration," Ordzhonikidze said. "I’m confident Russia has a duty to take a most active part in that mission and in the restoration works and we must get ready for them already now," he said. Read more
