Russia needs to overcome aggressive resistance on world arms market - Putin

MOSCOW, May 25. /TASS/. Moscow is increasingly confronted with the aggressive resistance of other countries in arms trade, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Commission for Military and Technical Cooperation on Monday. "Of course, we have to work in a complex situation. We’re confronted ever more frequently with the attempt of direct counteraction and sometimes these attempts go beyond the framework of competitive struggle and are of openly aggressive nature and, perhaps, political instruments are also used as camouflaged means of competitive struggle," Putin said. The Russian president urged to "develop military and technical contacts with all of our allies and strategic partners and consistently implement import substitution programs in the defense sector and enter new markets." Russia undoubtedly "needs to move forward, use higher standards, develop a new generation of armaments and military hardware and prepare a worthy replacement for high-class specialists and strengthen its positions on global markets," Putin said. The Russian president cited the example of Ukraine where "the rupture of long-standing cooperation ties with Russia, vitally important for Ukrainian defense enterprises, has pushed many of them to the brink of bankruptcy and compelled them to reduce skilled personnel." The Russian president also prioritized the development of import-substitution programs, which should be implemented using a "completely new, modern and promising technological base." Read more
