Russia points to need to consolidate efforts to counter terror threat in Middle East - foreign ministry

MOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. Moscow speaks out in favor of consolidating efforts of the world community in the fight against the growing terrorist threat in the Middle East, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday following meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Israeli Foreign Ministry Director-General Dore Gold. Lavrov and Gold "spoke highly of the intense trust-based Russian-Israeli political dialogue on pressing international and regional issues and the advanced nature of the bilateral cooperation in the trade, economic, scientific, technical, humanitarian and other areas." "Particular attention was paid to the current situation in the Middle East with an emphasis on the state of affairs in and around Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "(The two sides) pointed to the need to consolidate efforts of the international community in countering the growing terrorist threat in the region. They also noted the importance of the early unblocking of the process of the Israeli-Palestinian settlement." On the same day, consultations between Russian presidential envoy for the Middle East and Africa and Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Dore Gold were held. "They focused on the array of issues of the Middle East agenda as well as the key aspects of the multi-faceted Russian-Israeli cooperation in various areas," the ministry said.
