Russia says enriched uranium withdrawal from Iran moves Vienna deal closer to implementation

MOSCOW, December 29. /TASS/. The completed effort to remove enriched uranium from Iran brings the implementation of the landmark Vienna nuclear deal to the "finish line," Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. "All the enriched uranium envisaged by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has been removed from Iran’s territory with Russia’s assistance," the ministry said in a statement. On Monday, Russia completed withdrawing enriched uranium from Iran as part of an agreement between Tehran and the world’s six powers on the Iranian nuclear issue. "This result was possible thanks to the hard and meticulous work done by the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI)," the ministry stressed. "We call on the other participants of the process to show due zeal and a constructive approach to launch the practical implementation of the JCPOA as soon as possible," the statement reads. Under the Vienna agreement signed with the P5+1 group of international mediators (five permanent members of UN Security Council - US, UK, Russia, China, France - and Germany) this July, Tehran undertook to limit its stockpile of uranium enriched to 3.67 percent from 10 tons to 300 kilograms. The Iranian authorities have made a decision to sell surplus amounts of enriched uranium abroad in exchange for natural uranium. Reducing enriched uranium stocks is a mandatory term for switching to the implementation phase under the Iran nuclear deal. By that time, Iran is to cut the number of running centrifuges to 6,100 first-generation installations. All other centrifuges are to be dismantled and stored under control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Enrichment activities will be allowed at 5,060 centrifuges at the Natanz facility. Read more
