Russia sees no obstacles for S Stream despite sanctions - official

MOSCOW, August 1 (Itar-Tass) -- The construction of the South Stream pipeline meant to supply gas to Europe bypassing Ukraine will not face troubles despite the E.U. imposed economic sanctions on Russia, the country’s Permanent Representative to the union Vladimir Chizhov said at a video conference on Friday. “I can say that a new set of sanctions does not contain a single word about the gas sphere,” Chizhov said. “Bilateral agreements which were signed with the countries participants of this project are still in force,” he said. Chizhov separately said that the sanctions seem to contradict some norms of the WTO, and that Moscow will send a claim against them to the organization after studying these measures. On Thursday, the E.U. prohibited arms supplies to Russia, limited shipments of oil development equipment and technologies, and limited access of the country’s largest banks to the union’s long-term financing.
