Russia, Thailand gear up for comprehensive cooperation

MOSCOW, July 15 (TNA) - The 6th Session of the Russian-Thai Joint Commission, being held in Moscow, has approved a five-year Russian-Thai comprehensive cooperation plan which focuses on politics, tourism, trade and investment. Thai Ambassador to Russia Itti Ditbanjong told TNA on Wednesday that Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn is paying an official visit to Russia this week, during which he co-chairs the 6th Session of the Russian-Thai Joint Commission in the Russian capital and has endorsed the Russian-Thai cooperation plan. The Thai ambassador said although Russia has faced economic problems, including the depreciation of its currency, the value of its trade and investment with Thailand has kept growing. The top Thai envoy pointed out that Thailand has gained the largest share of Russian trade and investment value in Southeast Asia, amounting to 4.5-5 billion US dollars. Besides, Russian tourists form the second biggest group of foreign visitors to Thailand after Chinese travellers, earning the Thai Kingdom over 120 billion baht of tourism-related revenues last year. According to the top Thai envoy, the new Thailand Festival in Moscow will be held in 2017 to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Bangkok and to promote Thai food, other products, services and tourist attractions, after the past festival of its kind drew over 25,000 visitors and the Thai government, thus, plans to make it an annual event.
