Russian diplomat urges new approaches to fight against IS

BANGKOK, May 28. /TASS/. The international community should develop new approaches to the fight against the spread of influence of the Islamic State (IS) militant group as the existing methods have been inefficient, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told TASS on Thursday. "A large part of the Middle East is in the sphere of influence of the IS and its armed units. We need to think of more efficient measures that the international community needs to take," Gatilov said. The diplomat reminded that the UN Security Council has adopted a range of resolutions "calling on the states to be more actively involved in this effort." "We should acknowledge that there have been no tangible results yet. The US-led coalition forces also don’t have results although they are carrying out massive strikes. This is not the most efficient way to struggle against this evil," he said. Gatilov is taking part in the 71st session of the UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand. Read more
