Satun promotes Chebilang cultural tourism

SATUN, Jan 22 (TNA) -- The southern province of Satun is preparing to hold the Melayu Day event on January 30-31 to promote cultural tourism at the Chebilang village, rich with local cultures and traditions and the use of local dialect, where visitors could also enjoy a demonstration of rare Thai desserts. Mayor of Chebilang subdistrict of Satun provincial seat, Mamudnisam Bilangload said his town is preparing to launch an a local culture conservation themed event on January 30-31 called the Melayu Day at the Chebilang Flea Market. The event would be co-organised by the Chebilang Municipality Office, Satun Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO), the provincial cultural office, as well as the private sector, aimed to welcome in the ASEAN Community (AC) formation, which kicked off at the end of 2015. The mayor said 90 per cent of the people in the town are Islams, while the rest are Buddhists of Thai-Chinese descents and both sides have been living along side each other in harmony and peacefully for a long time. He noted that the town also possess a uniqueness in languages and religious cultures, as it uses Bahasa Melayu as the local dialect, while the town's locations on the Andaman coast has allowed frequent visits between Thai and Malaysians, prompting both sides to acquire similar cultures. The mayor pointed out that the event should help strengthen the relations between both neighbours and promote bilateral trade. (TNA)
