Security measures tightened up in far South

SONGKHLA, April 28 (TNA) -- Violence-prone areas in several southern provinces are under intensified security measures to prevent an untoward incident as April 28 this year is the 12th anniversary of killings at the Krue Se mosque. The areas under special security measures include Hat Yai district of Songkhla province. Officials at outer and inner checkpoints of the major commercial district of the South are seriously looking for suspicious vehicles. Security officials and bomb experts are also checking suspiciously parked vehicles and gas-fuelled vehicles are barred from entering local department stores. Maximum security operations are also active in Songkhla's provincial seat, Sadao and four other districts namely Chana, Thepha, Na Thawi and Saba Yoi which are close to other southernmost provinces and Malaysia. In Narathiwat province, checkpoints are operating on main and minor roads in all districts to ensure safety. On April 28, 2004, 32 militants were killed at the Krue Se mosque in the provincial seat of Pattani province. On the same day in 1948, police clashed with Thai Malays people in the Dusong Yo Rebellion and 108 people were killed then. (TNA)
