Several areas in Thai South remain under floodwater

SOUTHERN THAILAND, November 21 (TNA) - Several areas in southern Thailand remain heavily-flooded, as the Meteorological Department has warned of continual downpours in the region until this coming weekend. In Trang Province, Governor Somsak Parisutho has declared Muang and Na Yong Districts disaster zones, the second time in just one month, after more than 200 houses and farmlands in five sub-districts were damaged by flash floods from Banthad Mountain Range on November 19, with some areas inundated as high as 60 centimetres. In Phatthalung Province, although rain stopped on Thursday night and the level of floodwater in four districts was receding, villages in Khuan Khanun District remained under floodwater on Friday, forcing affected schools to temporarily suspend classes, while locals of more than 70 households in at least two villages in Muang District needed to travel by boat, as the level of floodwater remained above one metre. In Narathiwat Province, torrential rain stopped and a latest aerial survey by officials found that people in three communities of Su-ngai Kolok District were affected by 30-40 centimetre-floodwater, caused by overflows from the Su-ngai Kolok River. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department's southern office has issued its updated warning for people in six southern Thai provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat to stay on alert for heavy downpours for at least one more day.
