Situation along Thai-Cambodian border returns to normal, following brief problem

BANGKOK, October 15 (TNA) - The situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, including border trade, has now continued as usual through the Chong Sangam border crossing in the Phrai Phana locality of Phu Sing district in Si Sa Ket province in the Thai Northeast, following a brief problem. Earlier, Cambodian authorities closed the border crossing for about 20 minutes on Monday to protest against the improvement of a border highway in the Thai side. A contractor is improving a 569-meter section of Highway 2201 (Khukhan-Chong Sangam) from the three-way junction at the Chong Sangam market to the immigration office of Si Sa Ket. The highway connects to Road 67 from Chong Sangam to Siem Reap province in neighbouring Cambodia and Cambodian authorities initially feared that the highway improvement would have negative impacts on their side. Suriya Amornroteworawut, Deputy Governor of Si Sa Ket, then inspected the area, after learning that Cambodian people had placed containers at a local joint Thai-Cambodian checkpoint. Suriya told reporters on Tuesday that he has already informed Cambodian authorities that the highway improvement on the Thai side will lead to mutual benefits and does not damage the environment or any forest. The deputy governor said he believes there is no longer any problem, as the issue was negotiable, and he now believes in peace along the Thai-Cambodian border in Si Sa Ket. (TNA)
