Smog from forest fires in Indonesia covering southern Thailand

SATUN, Sept 19 (TNA) - Smog from forest fires in Indonesia has blanketed several parts of southern Thailand while health officials in the region have advised children and elderly people having respiratory problems to avoid doing outdoor activities. Visibility in the southern province of Satun was poor early Saturday due to haze from Indonesia covering the province again after the rain has stopped and motorists could see less than 800 metres only. Motorists and fishermen had to travel slowly while the government-run Pollution Control Department continuously checked that the air quality did not exceed the standard 120 microgrammes per cubic metre. Smog also appeared in the southern resort island of Phuket and, according to Phuket health officials, dust particle was measured at 125 microgrammes per cubic metre early Saturday, slightly exceeding the standard. Health officials in Phuket said there were about 250 spots of forest fire on the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia on Friday. (TNA)
