Smog in Thai South Eases

SONGKHLA, Sept 20 (TNA) - Smog problem caused by forest fires on Indonesia’ s Sumatra Islands in southern Thailand eased on Sunday but heavy fog due to cool weather covered Mae Sot district in the northern Tak province, 420 km north of Bangkok, bordering Myanmar, forcing motorists to drive extremely carefully. Visibility in Songkhla provincial seat and nearby Hat Yai district is better than the past two days while both arrival and departure commercial aircraft could land at Hat Yai International Airport normally, officials said. The Environment Office Region 16 Songkhla announced that smog problem which covered several southern provinces in the past few days has eased with air quality improved. In Phuket resort island, the dust particle on Sunday lowered to 91 from 139 microgrammes per cubic metre on Saturday while there are signs that the dust particle would decline in every southern province, the Office announced. However, children, elderly people and those suffering from respiratory problems are advised to wear facemask for safety. As the haze problem in the South has improved, weather in Mae Sot district in the northern Tak province has become cooler, bringing heavy fog near the Thai-Myanmar border, forcing motorists to drive slowly.
