Social Media Helps To Gather Information During Nepal's Disaster - Ban Ki Moon

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The social media has been crucial in helping to gather information in the recent's Nepal earthquake disaster, said secretary general of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-Moon. He said while mapping the need of the survivors and affected people in the disaster area, social media played an important role so that the traditional broadcasting media followed what had been uploaded in the platform. "When the first Nepal earthquake struck the nation, the only reports came in are from mobile devices," he said in his special video message at the opening of Asia Media Summit (AMS) 2015 here, Tuesday. Ban said that the UN system had also drawn the digital community to help the disaster response in Nepal by using mobile phone to disseminate information and messages to affected communities. Meanwhile in his video message Ban also welcomed all the participants of AMS 2015 to further discuss on social media which had made a huge impact in the global viewing habits. Malaysia hosts the 12th AMS 2015 themed 'Transforming Broadcasting in the Social Media Era' with the involvement of 500 media practitioners around the world sharing their knowledge on broadcast journalism at the three-day event beginning Tuesday. -- BERNAMA
