Songkran revellers asked to celebrate in polite manner

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has joined hands with several organisations in hosting Songkran fairs in several areas in the capital and simultaneously requested celebrants to splash water in polite manner. Pusadee Tamthai, deputy governor of BMA, said Sunday while presiding over the opening of the fair that BMA has launched campaigns, urging the people to celebrate Songkran or Thailand’s traditional New Year in polite manner. Khao San Road, backpacker haven in Bangkok is one of the significant areas for people to splash water at each other during the occasion, said Mrs. Pussadee. Owners of restaurants and bars along the road could sell alcoholic drink inside their premises but not in public places such as footpath and road. In an attempt to maintain peace, she said BMA has cooperated with police in the area, soldiers and several agencies to ensure that no liquor is sold in public places. Mrs. Pussadee said her agency did not impose any restrictions on women dress because it is individual rights, but for safety purpose, women should dress properly and not too revealing. Somchai Traipittayakul, Phra Nakorn district officer, said Songkran festival will be held on Khao San Road for four days, starting today. Several exciting activities will be organised including alms offering to monks, a beauty contest and, of course, water splashing. (TNA)
