Songkran travellers start returning to Bangkok

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) -- Airlines, trains and buses are prepared as celebrants for Songkran festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year, start returning to Bangkok to resume work next Monday. Sanit Promwong, director-general of Land Transport Department, said his department has cooperated with the Transport Co, Ltd, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority and the Don Mueang Airport in providing services to people as they return to the capital from upcountry after celebrating the water splashing festival and visited their relatives and friends. In order to facilitate passengers, Mr Sanit said buses of Transport Co, Ltd would be temporarily allowed to send off passengers at the nearby Land Transport Department headquarters as more than 150 of its buses transporting passengers from the North and Northeastern provinces arrive Bangkok between 4-7 am. Besides, the Land Transport Department has asked taxi cooperatives to prepare sufficient taxis for people heading for Bangkok, he said. Officials from the department have been assigned to patrol the bus station and the Don Mueang Airport to ensure that public transportation services do not swindle passengers. Harsh punishment will be imposed against taxi drivers refusing to use meters or turn down services to would-be passengers. (TNA)
