Songkran water festival nears end as people head home

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - Thailand is celebrating the last load of Songkran water festival as people begin to head home, overcrowding on highways and at bus terminals. In Northern Chiang Rai Province, people were packing long-distance buses routes to get home in time for work on Wednesday. Bus operators said all their bus rides had been fully booked up to April 22nd, including from the Chiang Rai-Bangkok route, as well as other Eastern, Northeastern and Southern routes. In Northeastern Khon Kaen Province, an immense traffic could be seen over Mitraparp Highway heading toward Bangkok. Meanwhile, cleanup was already underway in Bangkok city. Over 500 people had been mobilized to work on a one-kilometre section of Silom road from Saladaeng to Nararom intersection, and also at Bang Rak, Pathumwan, Sathorn and Yannawa districts. It was estimated that nearly 100,000 people celebrated the Songkran festival on Silom road daily in the past three days, and up to 20 million baht was estimated to change hands per day during the festival.
