State Agencies, Academics Brainstorm Thailand’s Education Reform

BANGKOK, July 27 (TNA) – As concerns grow over poor quality of education in Thailand while the ASEAN Community (AC) is approaching fast, representatives of related state agencies, academics and students on Sunday attended a brainstorming session on how to reformthe education system in the country. The session, organised for the third time after the National Council for Peace and Order staged the May 22 coup in Thailand, is being held and, according to Admiral Chumnum Ajwong, chief of the reform working committee, Permanent Secretary for Defence Gen. Surasak Kanchanarat wanted to see education in the country reformed and students have to play a significant role in it. “The government has allocated a large amount of budget to the Education Ministry ever year but the result is still not satisfactory and this could be seen as Thailand’s education is now ranked eighth among ASEAN members,” said Adm. Chumnum. He said that the ASEAN Community will implement soon while the working committee is preparing information for the national reform committee, to be established later. Under the planned education reform, youths must have courage to speak out, honest, eager to learn and be brave enough to show responsibility, said Adm. Chumnum. (TNA)
