Statistics Show Divorces Are Rising Among Thai People

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - On the occasion of the Family Day in Thailand on Monday, Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn, spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Health, said figures from the National Statistical Office show that marriages become vulnerable among young Thai people. In 2012, she said, a total of 314,338 couples registered their marriage and 111,377 old couples divorced and accounted for 35% of the newly wedded couples. Registered divorces rose by 27% from nine previous years. In 2003, a total of 328,356 couples had their marriage registered and 80,836 old couples reported their divorce. The most common causes of the divorces are economic and work pressures that led to disputes in new families that had to struggle to make ends meet, Dr Panpimol said and added that the second most common reason is impatience between husbands and wives as both of them have work and they think they are financially independent. The spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Health noted that the rising divorce rate results in the growing number of single parents. To maintain marriage, she recommended that husbands and wives cope with problems without emotion, respect each other’s roles and balance their activities in and outside their families. (TNA)
