Students Stage Rally Against WTO Conference In Denpasar

Denpasar, Bali, Dec 2 (Antara) - A group of students, claiming to be a part of the National Students Forum (FMN), staged a rally against a World Trade Organization (WTO) conference outside the United States` Consulate on Monday. "We reject the liberalization that will result from a scheme proposed by the WTO. Therefore, we urge the government to not take part in the WTO agreement," FMN Secretary General Muhammad Hasan Harry Sandy Ame stated. He said the United States was one of WTO member nations, which had played a dominant role in controlling every agreement during the WTO trade ministerial meeting. "The United States exerts control over the WTO`s policies and thus each meeting always results in inequality between developed and poor countries," Ame said. He noted that as a global trade institution with legal binding, WTO also had a significant impact on education. "Consequently, the cost of education is increasing every year," he added. In view of the rally, a total of 200 policemen were deployed for extra security at the United States Consulate on Hayam Wuruk Street in Denpasar. "We have deployed 200 joint police personnel to secure the United States Consulate here," Denpasar city police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Gusti Kade Budhi Harryarsana said on Monday. He added that the security around the Consulate had been stepped up in anticipation of any possible security disturbances during the anti WTO conference rally. "We do not want the rally to end in chaos. Therefore, we want to ensure security by deploying hundreds of police personnel at the United States Consulate on Hayam Wuruk Street," Gusti stated. Gusti pointed out that the additional security measures had been put in place not only for the protection of the United States Consulate, but also the Australian representative`s office located on Tantular Street in Denpasar.
