Surabaya Wins Lee Kwan Yew Prize

SURABAYA, E Java, July 10 (Antara) - Surabaya City, East Java's provincial capital, has won Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in Special Mention category in Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center, Singapore.

The Mayor of Surabaya City, Tri Rismaharini, in her statement on Monday explained the city's sustainable development.

Other cities that also achieved similar awards are Hamburg of Germany, Kazan of Russia and Tokyo of Japan. Meanwhile, the primary prize has been awarded to Seoul City of South Korea.

The mayor said Surabaya has a smaller regional budget than three other cities that also received the prizez.

Risma said the local government successfully improved the slum fisherman's village into a cleaner and attractive area.

The economic program has also improved the welfare in fisherman's village, and the condition of the social and children's management.

The Surabaya administration has also educated people in financial products and management. The administration has also assiste the licensing process of particular products from the people.

"We have also assured the legal procedures by managing the business licensing and patent products," she said.

Risma explained Surabaya has many scholarship programs for Surabaya people. They also cooperate with universities in giving scholarships.

The Surabaya administration will also involve the local community in developing innovation and technology to handle future challenges.
