Survey: Majority of Malaysian Workers Will Not Engage in Unethical Behaviour to Advance Careers

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- A majority of Malaysian workers (92 per cent) will not engage in unethical behavior to advance their careers, according to a survey conducted by JobStreet.com. JobStreet.com is a leading online recruitment company. The Country Manager of JobStreet.com, Chook Yuh Yng said despite the increase in competition locally and globally, it was comforting to know much of the Malaysian workforce valued work ethics and would not compromise on it to get ahead. "It’s important for employers and managers to help employees identify the ethical code of business conduct, not only through words but also actions," he said in a statement on Monday. A total of 515 working people, 56 per cent being male respondents and 44 per cent female, participated in the survey conducted by JobStreet.com in May. Other findings of the survey revealed that 98 per cent would not steal credit for their colleague’s work,89 per cent would not lie in their resume and 85 per cent would not flatter or compliment their boss to get a pay rise or promotion. When it came to the question of covering up mistakes made at work, a total of 62 per cent answered they would not. However, interestingly 25 per cent said that they would do so, if they won’t get caught. Another 13 per cent indicated they would. A majority of 68 per cent also believed that it was unethical to present a project to the upper management without informing or reporting to their immediate superior. -- BERNAMA
