Suspect In JIS Case May Be Sentenced To 15 Years

Jakarta, Aug 26 (Antara) - Agun Iskandar, who has been named as a suspect in the sexual assault of a kindergarten pupil of Jakarta International School (JIS), may be sentenced to 15 years` imprisonment, a public prosecutor said. "Because of his wrongdoings, the suspect, Agun Iskandar, could be sentenced under article 82 of Law No. 23 of 2002 on Child Protection adj. article 55 sub-article 1 of the Penal Code adj. article 64 sub-article (1) of the Penal Code," Rahimah revealed in a closed-door session at the South Jakarta district court on Tuesday. The panel of judges have decided to adjourn the session until next week to hear the suspect`s defense. Meanwhile, Saut Rajagukuguk, Agun Iskandar`s lawyer, has appealed to the panel to declare the session open to the public. "The session must be open and transparent, so the public can evaluate it. The judges, however, held a different view," he noted. "What is clear is that we will lodge an exception," he said. Agun is the first of six JIS cleaning service personnel accused of sexual assault to stand trial. The other four are Afriska, Zainal, Virgiawan, and Syahrial. Awar, another suspect, was found dead at the toilet of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police late on April 2014. Chief of general crime of the South Jakarta public prosecutor`s office Chandar stated that the first trial was held behind closed door pursuant to the child protection law because the victim was a child.
