Sustainable development goals included in IPU's meetings

New York, Sept. 3 (BNA): The First Vice Chairman of the Shura Council, Dr. Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, presented a proposal during the discussion session between parliamentarians at the UN headquarters. He suggested the permanent inclusion of the Sustainable Development Goals as a topic in the agenda of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU)'s meetings. The suggestion has been lauded by the head of discussion session. The suggestion will be submitted to the IPU for studying. Dr. Jamal Fakhro said the proposal was presented during the discussions between parliamentarians as part of the workshop themed "Translating New Development Goals into Action" until the discussion of application programmes and mechanisms and implementation of these goals between parliamentarians continuously and exchange expertise in regard thereof. This came as part of Bahrain's parliamentary delegation's participation in the Fourth Meeting of Heads of Parliaments from around the world convened in New York from August 31 to September 2. The meeting gathered more than 130 heads of parliaments from around the globe who explored issues of peace, development and democracy. The IPU's meeting convenes once every five years as part of a series of high-level meetings whose outcomes contribute into the UN Summits' post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
