Suu Kyi Casts Vote in Yangon

YANGON, Nov 8 (TNA) - Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the major opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), on Sunday cast vote at a polling booth in Yangon, former capital of Myanmar, amid a warm welcome by her supporters who shouted “Victory Victory”. Dressed in red blouse and a flower on her hair which is her symbol, Mrs. Suu Kyi was surrounded by the army of local and foreign journalists as soon as she stepped down from her car and walked toward the polling booth to cast vote. Mrs. Suu Kyi expected earlier that her NLD party would receive most votes from eligible voters and clinch a victory in this historic election. Some 90 political parties are contesting in Sunday’s election. However, it is expected that only two of them would compete hard in the election. They are the army-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the NLD. Meanwhile, hundreds of Myanmar eligible voters lined up to cast their votes in a district of Myeik city, opposite the Thai province of Prachuap Khiri Khan. There are about 4,500 eligible voters at this and nearby constituencies while four political parties, including USDP and the NLD, are contesting for seats. Myanmar army personnel plus responsible government officials are manned outside polling booths which opened from 6.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. So far, no untoward incidents were reported. (TNA)
