Tens Of Security Personnel Killed By Unidentified Gunmen

Jayapura, Papua, Aug 1 (Antara) - At least 30 people, mostly police officers and several civilians were killed by unknown gunmen in the Lanny Jaya district of Papua. "I received reports stating that at least 30 police personnel and civilians have become victims of a violent attack launched by an unknown gunmen group in Lanny Jaya," District Chief Befa remarked here on Friday. What the armed group has been doing is grave concern, and the military or police officers should have taken stronger steps to avoid people from falling victims to the violent attack, he affirmed. District Chief Befa stated that he will support every step taken by the police, which is backed by the military, in order to arrest the armed groups. "Do not be afraid to carry out any acts of human right violation because the armed groups are also doing it," he affirmed. Befa emphasized that if the matter is not addressed immediately then the brutality of the armed groups will increase and lead to more casualties. Befa also confirmed that there has been no mass displacement of the local residents in relation to the armed group violence. Indeed, there are some people who were displaced, but the number is not much, Befa stated, adding that the displaced people were usually those who were directly involved in the case. That is why the police must not hesitate to uphold enforcing the law, and the Lanny Jaya government is ready to help, Befa emphasized. According to reports, two armed groups, led by Puron Wenda and Enden Wanimbo, are launching frequent attacks in the Lanny Jaya district and harming the civilians.
