Terengganu Government Will Continue To Send Students To Russia

PASIR PUTEH (Terengganu, Malaysia), May 11 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu government through the Terengganu Foundation will continue to send its sponsored students to Russia for further studies despite the incident of a hostel fire on April 22 which killed one of its students. Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said top students would continue to be sent there, especially for medical and engineering studies. "We are not discouraged by the incident," he told reporters after paying his last respects on Nor Atikah Alias, 25, who was buried, here, Sunday. Nor Atikah, a final-year medical student at the Russian National Research Medical University in Moscow who had 30 per cent burns on her face, hands and legs in the fire, died at the intensive-care unit of Sklifosovskogo Hospital. She was laid to rest next to the grave of her late grandmother, Esah Ali, at about 10.45am. Ahmad Razif said Nor Atikah's demise was a great loss to the Malaysian state government as she was a brilliant student and an inspiration for other students in pursuing knowledge. The state government bore the costs of her treatment in hospital, the arrangement to bring back her remains to Malaysia and her burial, besides the flights for her parents to Moscow. --BERNAMA
