Thai army chief orders tightened border during Songkran festival

BANGKOK, April 12 (TNA) – Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has instructed army personnel stationing at border areas to stay alert to prevent drug and illicit smuggling during Songkran festival or Thailand’s traditional New Year, according to the army deputy spokeswoman. Colonel Sirichan Nhathong told reporters on Saturday that General Prayuth has also order army personnel to set up 237 service centres nationwide to assist motorists and travellers between April 11 – 17, aimed at reducing road accidents in the country. She said army-run hospitals have also been ordered to prepare sufficient medical personnel and equipment for treatment to patients during the festival. (TNA)
