Thai authorities to extradite Swiss bank robber

BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will extradite a suspected Swiss bank robber who was arrested on Thursday while hiding in Thailand and it will also ask the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) to examine assets of the fugitive Swiss man's wife. The 42-year-old Swiss suspect, identified as Enzo Gerber, arrived at Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi International Airport with a tourist visa on March 19 and was apprehended in Hua Hin of Prachuap Khiri Khan province in the upper Thai South, as he was accused of robbing a bank in Switzerland and making off with money worth over 150 million baht. Police Captain Khemachart Prakaihongmanee, a DSI director for transnational crime, told journalists on Friday that Gerber was first fined at the Hua Hin court for overstaying his visa and the Swiss suspect and his Thai wife were found to have bought many assets in Prachuap Khiri Khan, including mansions and 19 vehicles. Police Captain Khemachart said that most of the assets were registered with the name of his Thai wife, and that the DSI has seized all his assets; while asking the AMLO to decide whether his wife will be charged with money laundering. The Swiss fugitive later confessed Thursday night that his gang had robbed the bank in Switzerland and shared the money before escaping, but he did not reveal how much money he had brought to Thailand.
