Thai Authorities Resolving Surrogacy-Related Cases

BANGKOK, August 11 (TNA) - Thailand's Department of Social Development and Welfare will hold a meeting this week to resolve problems resulting from surrogacy cases, including the case of the surrogate baby named Gammy whose Australian biological parents hired a Thai surrogate mother. The Department’s director-general Yanee Lertkrai said that the Thai authorities had to carefully consider the intention of the Australian parents in taking Gammy to Australia. She said that Thai law considered women who were pregnant with the children were biological mothers. The Australians' plan must undergo consideration by Thailand's Child Adoption Committee or a Thai court. The case was also complicated because the surrogate mother had been paid, Ms Yanee said. “The issue is special and needs careful consideration. Many agencies are involved and must study many laws including Australian ones. Besides the past trip of the other child must be investigated,” Ms Yanee said. The senior official also said that no one claimed to be a relative of any of the nine surrogate children recently found in a condominium in the Lat Phrao area and concerned authorities would investigate the case of their claimed biological father who was a Japanese man because he registered different mothers for those children and their carers were not their mothers. The authorities must also look into the legality of the registration of the children and the marriage, Ms Yanee said. (TNA)
