Thai blind leader elected as member of UN-CRPD

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) - A Thai blind man, Monthian Buntan, who is also a member of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), has been elected as a committee member of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN-CRPDC) for 2017-2020. Social Development and Human Security Minister Police General Adul Saengsingkaew, thus, led Monthian to pay a courtesy call on Thai Prime Minsiter General Prayut Chan-ocha at Bangkok's Government House on Thursday. On the occasion, the Thai prime minister congratulated Monthian on his election and praised the Thai blind leader and his team for their cooperation until Thailand has won the UN position. Besides, the Thai prime minister stressed on his government's hope for equal co-existence in the Thai society between PWDs and their physically-abled fellows. In response, Monthian thanked the Thai government and other relevant agencies for their support for the rights of PWDs. The 51-year-old Thai blind leader and a leading campaigner for the rights of PWDs is the only disabled NLA member, who was also earlier appointed as a Thai Senator. (TNA)
