Thai Cabinet, NCPO nominate 11 experts to join Constitution Drafting Committee

BANGKOK, November 4 (TNA) - The Cabinet and the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) have agreed to nominate, for further consideration and decision by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), 11 legal experts in their quota to join Thailand's 36-member Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC). An NCPO spokesman, Colonel Winthai Suvaree, told journalists on Tuesday that the agreement was made at the 2nd Cabinet-NCPO joint meeting, held in Bangkok earlier in the day. Colonel Winthai said that the NCPO selected Dr. Borwornsak Uwanno, incumbent Secretary-General of King Prajadhipok's Institute as the CDC chairman, while its other five nominees include Sujit Boonbongkan, a former Constitutional Court judge, Charoon Inthajarn, a former president of the Constitutional Court, Prasopsuk Boondej, a former Senate speaker, Banjerd Singkhaneti, incumbent Dean of the Graduate School of Law at the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), and Krit Kraichitti, a former director-general of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs under the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The spokesman stated that the NCPO has thoroughly considered until reaching the agreement with the Cabinet to nominate the legal experts, who are believed to be acceptable by all sectors. Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha, who is also the NCPO chief, told journalists that all those nominated are competent and specialized in legal affairs and the Charter drafting is aimed at creating good governance, promoting public participation and reducing ideological differences in the country. Thailand's 36-member CDC comprises of 20 members selected by the National Reform Council (NRC), five members each by the NLA and the Cabinet and another six members, including the CDC chairman, by the NCPO.
