Thai Deputy PM says new economic stimulus package not needed

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) – Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula, who supervises economic affairs, says a new round of economic stimulus measures is not necessary because the national economy is picking up. He said although the country’s exports had not improved and the consumer confidence index was the lowest in ten months, tourism recovered very well in the same period and requests for factory establishment were rising. According to the deputy prime minister, the economy had gradually recovered, but would not result in quick improvements due to a contraction in exports. He added the liberalization of the service sector in ASEAN would happen as agreed within the year-end except in telecommunications and financial businesses and the complete liberalization of the service sector would follow in 2016. Meanwhile, Labour Minister Surasak Kanjanarat said the economic slowdown had no impacts on the unemployment rate because there were always new jobs and sidelines. He said about 300,000 people were jobless in the country. Most of them reported hold portfolios in the accounting and financial sector and had vocational degrees. In a separate report, Thailand’s labour officials would be meeting representatives of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security next week to discuss job placement for unemployed people, and to review regulations on informal workers and jobs for people with disabilities.
